 An American Mother By Arnab Jan Deka | Summary and Analysis 

     An American Mother is a one of the short story of Collection of stories which was written by Arnab Jan Deka. He is an Assamese Indian writer. He wrote many novels, biography, short story and poetry. He authored around 150 books. In his collection of short story has three stories. They are " Three village Girls" , A"American Mother" and " Himalayan Mystic Meeting".

      In this blog, I'm going to summarise the story of An American Mother which has a special place in my heart because I like this story. These three short stories unique in their way. 

SUMMARY

     Beginning of the story, Early morning routine of the main character who named Deborah Ann Sumlin. She is the central character of this story. She used to wake up early and have a morning walk. Then make some coffee and snacks for her. She worked flaxy glass factory in Florida, USA. She is a skilled worker and good artist. She called as Debbie in this story. She has one son who is a teenager, senior grade student named Dunstan and also called as Sonny. Debbie always care for her son but he doesn't even concentrate his academic education. She worried about him.

          Debbie married a drunken who doesn't care his family so she leaved him and lived alone with her son. She doesn't share anything to her son although he doesn't interest about that. 

      In this story narrator is neighbour of Debbie who called " narrator". He planned to go Canada but unfortunately he came to Florida worked as a civil engineer. He lived next door of Debbie and they didn't know eachother.

     One day they went to seashore separately unfortunately met eachother and introduced themselves. They started their conversation simply and then talked about sea find and garden of flowers in the beach. Both of them are infatuation with sea. They meet regularly and talked about the atmosphere. Sometimes they just walked around the sea. Day by day their friendship grows and shared about personal information. 

       On the other basis they are neighbour to eachother. Debbie come to his house weekly ones to help him and did some cleaning work. One day she shared about her parents and family. She has two sisters and one brother. Her parents had fifty years of happy married life. Dana who is one of her sister. Debbie loved Dana very much when compare to elder sister.

        Narrator has a beautiful narrative sense of story. In this story he described Debbie about her Irish eyes and red hair. She is very active and optimist. She is also very simple and natural. They have similar opinions about life. Their friendship is worthy and it's not compare in reality because they are pure.

     One day she came to his house in early morning while he  get ready to go to his office. His thought like why she come to our house this so early and why her face is so worried?. Then he asked about what happened. She said that her son imprisoned and complaint was given by me. He stole some gadgets from his friend. Narrator was shocked when she tell about the problem. 

      Narrator really admired her character. Then police men decided that Sonny should join Juvenile Correctional School for some years. She went there often and gave some foods to him weekly ones. Finally Sonny realised his mistake and understand his mother's love. Narrator gives the perfect name for her that is she is the mother of America. He found that good mother of America is her. Story ends!

MY REVIEW:

     This short story is five star read for me. I can relate to the character of Debbie because I too loved nature and sea shore. Her thoughts and words are so perfect when it comes to delivered to others. Apart from that the relationship between Debbie and the Narrator was extraordinary. They are pure and trustworthy. She did her work perfectly in her life as mother.
